Netball Academy Continues

The Trinity College Netball Academy is continuing in in Terms 2 & 3, 2012 with invitations recently sent out to a select group of netballers from Year 6 – 12.
We see this as a wonderful opportunity for players to develop netball skills even further.  As a Netball SA endorsed Netball Specialist School, we plan to provide all of our netball players with the ability to improve their skills, with plans include more clinics open to a wider group in the near future.
The exciting news is that Michelle den Dekker has agreed to be the Trinity College Netball Academy coach for Terms 2 & 3 2012.  Michelle den Dekker OAM, is a former Australian Netball Captain and has a wealth of knowledge she is ready to pass on to all aspiring young Netballers. This will be a fantastic opportunity for the girls to share in some fantastic coaching drills and skill development, from Michelle, who was widely recognized as one the most exciting players to grace the netball arena worldwide. As Australian Netball Captain, Michelle played 84 tests for Australia and is still the longest serving Australian Netball Captain, with a 92% win ratio.  Michelle is also a former Ravens/Thunderbirds defender, current Australian Netball Diamonds specialist defence coach and current Coaching Director at Garville Netball Club.

3 Cheers for Gawler River girls!!

A group of almost 80 Gawler River girls from Year 5, 6 and 7 had a wonderful excursion to participate in the Netball SA 3 Cheers Community Program.  The program was delivered by Adelaide Thunderbird players Natalie von Bertouch, Erin Bell and Carla Borrego in the Netball SA Community Learning Centre at Netball SA Stadium.

The 3 Cheers Netball SA Community Program has been developed to promote netball, healthy eating, healthy bodies and healthy minds for primary age children.  It is an activity based learning program with direct educational outcomes, which addresses key messages about the importance that physical activity and healthy nutrition plays in keeping us all healthy. Also reinforced are the positive learning behaviours and wider social benefits of physical activity in living a healthy life.

Key topics included Healthy Nutrition delivered by Adelaide Thunderbird, Natalie von Bertouch (Dietician) who went through healthy eating, food diary and analysis, energy balance in foods, influences on diet, understanding the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating resource and media and marketing of food.

Adelaide Thunderbird, Erin Bell (Exercise Physiologist) delivered the Healthy Body sessions and included benefits of physical activity, influences on participation, the importance of living a balanced lifestyle, activity diary and analysis, the meaning of fitness and fitness testing. Students participated in physical activities and had plenty of fun.

The Healthy Mind session by Adelaide Thunderbird, Carla Borrego included topics such as resilience, working as a team, goal setting, decision making, self-identity, leadership, personal brand and logo recognition.

B Grade 38 defeated St George's White 37
The 4th game of the season would help to decide our standing in the B Grade division.  It was a tough first quarter with the tight St George’s defenders making it difficult for the Trinity girls to settle.  They stuck to their game and held their own, but Trinity were down by 2 at the first break.
The next two quarters were even with the opposition continuing to make it difficult for the younger Trinity team.  Clear leads and cool heads kept the girls in the game, being down by 6 goals, but still within reach.  A solid last quarter, but a tough fight, the girls stayed positive and were able to score accurately and stay focused right to the end.  They turned over some important balls to even the score with a minute to go, then were able to go into the lead for the first time in the game to win by a solitary goal.  Well done in a tough game.

D Grade lost to St Georges by 14 goals
The girls had another tough battle against a very fastSt George's side. All girls put in 100% for the entire game, and should be pleased with their improvements over the past few weeks. With the girls working hard at training, I feel there will be so much more improvement for the weeks to come. We are enjoying ourselves and the girls are playing well as a team. We look forward to tackling Gumnuts for the second time next Saturday.

J Grade Red 37 defeated St George's 28
A 9 goal win is a great result for the Trinity Red team against the team currently on top of the ladder.
The girls had a shaky start but it was a great turn around to set up a strong lead in the first quarter.  The second quarter was a bit scrappy and St George's were able to take advantage and gain some ground on us.  A better 3rd quarter with tight defence and stronger leads gave Trinity the edge they needed to build on the margin and the last quarter they were able to fend off the St George's team in an even quarter, to stay ahead of them until the whistle blew.  Well done girls.

J Grade White  lost to Xavier

J Grade Blue  15 lost to Gumnuts 90
What can I say! The girls gave it their all and didn’t give up. Along with a couple of players playing with illnesses and an injury in the 4th quarter the girls were behind from the start.
I can see improvement each week, just need to work on our defence a little more, keep it up girls.

L Grade 9 lost to St Georges 17

Although the score doesn't depict it, this game was close the entire duration. Our girls fought hard for four quarters and it was only weak passes and great defence by the opposition that saw our girls lose this week. A hard fought match: well done girls.

M Grade White 16 drewVirginia 16
This week we played a strong Virginia team and whilst we drew, and that was fantastic, we must note that they only played with six players. Thank you to Zahra who filled up for us at late notice, giving us a full team. The game began slowly and it looked like Virginia would compete at a much stronger level than us, but some position changes at half time saw Trinity White become more competitive. Hayley and Louise shot strongly and worked the circle well together. Whilst Isabelle and Jade worked tirelessly in defence. To their credit, they never gave up, despite some excellent shooting from the Virginia team. Our mid-court players must now learn to be more useful around the circle, helping our defenders and aiding our shooters. Passing was still an issue and will, again, be a focus at training! If we want to beat the Virginia team when they have a full seven players we will need to be much tighter in both defence and attack! But overall, a draw was a fantastic outcome seeing as through we were down by 4 goals at ¾ time!

M Grade Yellow 31 defeated St Georges 4.
This week the girls had an exceptional game. They showed great determination and excellent team work. They moved the ball down the court well, showed great defensive skills and the shooters shot with a high accuracy. There were multiple changes to positions throughout the game this week and the girls showed their versatility in being able to handle playing different positions. All players should be proud of their efforts this week. A fantastic 27 point win, well done girls!

M Grade Red  Bye

O Grade Red 14 defeated Gumnuts 11
Players were put in unfamiliar positions for the first quarter of the game, which stretched their skills. During this first quarter the Gumnuts lunged forward with a formidable lead; however, after the second quarter Trinity Red had brought the score back within points. The team worked very well together and this was particularly evident after injury sidelined one of our players. After a quick swap the team was back in it obtaining the lead and maintaining it until the end of the game.

P Grade 43 defeatedVirginia 0
All the girls played another great game this week - all the skills learnt from training are flowing through to their games. Everyone is using the free space really well which allowed us to carry the ball down to produce the winning goals. There is great team spirit among the girls and this is showing in the games week after week. A fantastic win and keep up the good work girls.

Trinity Red 18defeated Trinity Blue 10
A few mix ups before the beginning of the game caused some confusion between positions but with this in mind, every player got in and played extremely well. Some of the girls were put in positions they weren't used to, so it was good for them to try something new. We also welcomed two new team mates this game who fitted in very well. well done to the girls for their third consecutive win!

Netta 2
Trinity Orange 21 lost to Trinity White 2.
Today’s game was an outstanding one, played by the girls. The girls played a really good defensive game, with a lot of turnovers and intercepts.Especially well done to Ashleigh Borchard, Macy Stoneman and Jessica Parish for their hard work in the defense. They got many turnovers and intercepts, which contributed to our great win. The shooting skills of the girls were impressive today, along with all the hard work done in the mid court. Trinity White also played a good game and kept aiming for the lead. Well done girls, you all played a great game and should be a boost in your confidence.
Playford Primary 1 lost to Trinity Blue 3
The game started with great excitement and the girls took a little while to settle. The girls are starting tolook down the court and are becoming much better at base and sideline throw-ins and remembering where to stand. Kayla Healey played a great second half at GS to score 2 goals. Sophie Brice played well in WA and her skills are developing super-fast. Keep listening and learning girls. Great effort.
Trinity White (2) lost to Trinity Orange (22)
Trinity White started the game with determination to win as they missed out on a win the previous round by one goal. The girls soon realised they were generally shorter than Trinity Orange. Despite the unpromising score board, I was very impressed with the girls attitude towards the game. The defenders never gave up, as well as the midcourt. With one of the team members being sick, the rest of the team happily stepped up into unfamiliar positions. All girls on the court deserve congratulations for their outstanding effort and perseverance.

Trinity Light Orange 1 Lost to Trinity Green 11
Unfortunately we made many unforced errors this week which saw Trinity Green use them to their advantage. Our defence needs to be worked on, but we did have moments of brilliance in the goal circle but we did not convert and our game suffered. The Girls enthusism for the game never ceases to amaze me even in defeat. Congratulations to all the girls. I look forward to next week.
Trinity Green won against Trinity Light Orange 11 to 1
We played Trinity Light Orange another Blakeview team and the girls were very excited about playing against most of their friends. While it could have been easy to get distracted, I gave the girls strict instructions to keep to our game plan and play our own game. The girls certainly managed to do this and the result was a well deserved win. The girls have put in the effort at training over the past couple of weeks and are becoming more of a unit.
The teams mid court play was a little more spread out than previous weeks and the girls showed their understanding of the drills and tasks that we have been working on at training. I.e zones and driving leads for the ball.
Our defenders were really on their game, with great intercepts, cut off balls and pressure around the ring. Paige Thomson was great in GD and her and Elana Hewitson when in Gk really held the goals to a minimum. Taylor Gregory has taken on a new position this season in goal attack, and she is settling in very well. Shooting 9 out of the 11 goals this week and fantastic 21 the out of 24 the week before. We have gained a new player in Isabella Shaw coming up from Modified, we would like to welcome her to the team, we are sure she will fit right in! Lastly if we could just send our very best wishes to Emily Hooker who broker arm at club training last week, we are all hoping for a speedy recovery! In summarising a very well played game I am very happy with each and every one of my girls efforts!
Trinity Orange 0 lost to Trinity Blue 25
Unfortunately, the girls faced their first loss of the season. We took to the court with 6 players and they all fought hard to get the ball to the goal circle, but the shots just weren’t going in. Sophie did a brilliant job in GK in the second half, resulting in the opposition scoring only 7 goals in that half. Erin showed how adaptable and valuable a player she is playing at C for the first time. Olivia and Hayley, tried their best in goals and never gave up, they were outclassed in the circle with good defensive play by the opposition. Laura did a good job in GK, but played a stronger game when placed in her familiar position at WD. And Zara, our fill in player for the game, who we welcome as a permanent member in our team, played at GD and persisted in following her player and worked hard to get rebounds. A few things we will now have to work on in training are consistently moving forward for the ball, remembering to spread out and making sure our passes are strong and passed directly to the person. Good game girls, let’s train hard and kick butt in the next game!
Trinity Blue 25 defeated Trinity Orange 0,
The Girls played with lots enthusiasm last night. The Girls lead well and there were lots of intercepts. In total they intercepted 46 times. After three games the Girls have been able to keep the Goals against them to Zero. Showing the Girls are working hard at keeping the ball to their advantage. Things to work on this week at training is stepping and passing. Fantastic effort Girls.
Trinity Light Blue 2 lost to Evanston Tigers 17
What an incredible effort this week from the Trinity Light Blue girls! Facing a much taller opposition, the girls used their passing and leading skills to enhance their game. Evanston Tigers were restricted to 4 goals in the first quarter, and it was evident that the Light Blue girls were determined to place their first goal on the scoreboard. Their tenacity increased throughout the game, with some brilliant work in defence, and increasing speed and strength in attack. Congratulations to the Trinity Light Blue girls for encouraging each other with positive talk, and for posting our first goal (or 2!) in the last quarter!

Junior
Light Blue Junior 1's played Junior 1 yellow
Lightning Bolt had another loss this week by 7 goals. Even though the girls didn’t win, they can walk away with their heads held high. The set plays which were rehearsed at training, were followed through excellently during the game, allowing Lightning bolt t score some terrific goals. A stand out this week was Haylie Craig, Year 7 North, who was an asset in defence in the first half and then attacking in goals in the last half. Haylie has shown she is a well-rounded player. Her partner in defence also had a great match, Melissa Cavallaro, Year 7 North stood her ground and stuck tight to her opposition and intercepted some tricky pass. Well done Mel! Another stand out performance this week was Harmony Maher, Year 7 North who was battling after being sick last week. Harmony played in defence in the last quarter and gave some strong leads when Lightning Bolt were attacking.
Lightning Bolt was be focussing on set plays and ball handling this week at training. Then, hopefully we can add to their winning tally next week.
Great work Lighting Bolt!
Trinity Yellow 26 defeated Trinity Red 20.
Both teams started with a very good offensive and defensive game resulting in a tight low scoring first quarter with Yellow in front by 1 goal. Trinity Yellow came out firing in the second quarter with some more excellent team work from both the newer players and the more experienced players giving usa 9 goal lead at half time. Trinity Red lifted to produce a very hard fought game in the second half but could not come back from the strong lead that Yellow had after the fast and skilful 2nd quarter resulting in the 6 goal win to Trinity Yellow. Again another great effort by all the girls.
Trinity Redlost 20-26Trinity Yellow
As it was only the second game for trinity red,i was still trying to find the correct positions for the girls and what worked well on the court. Each player took what we worked on at training to the game. From the centre passes to the goal ring, were the strongest point for the team in this game, with girls leading to the ball and taking their time to shoot. With new players still coming into the team defence was left open to fill, a quick decision to put one of the shooters into GK was proved as a good idea as she was strong and well aware of the ring. Each player worked well with each other, and all though it was a loss, it was only the second game and there are many more to come. Well down girls very proud of your efforts.
Trinity White(Karagiannis) – Did not play
Trinity Orange(Rose) – Won on a forfeit as Trinity White did not turn up.

Trinity Light Blue 22 lost to Trinity Dark Red 43
This week’s game was by far the best thegirls had played together. Enthusiasm was high, and the game managed to flow well from our defensive turnoversintothegoal ring. This week the girls managed to create a lot of turnovers, with Tiffany Durbincreating the most(13). Someturnovers and intercepts were used well, othersgotturned back over in the centre court something we will be working on in training. The defensive pressure wasgreat, and our WD's managed to incorporate some tactical moveslearnt in training. This week’s game was enjoyable to watch, and I am very proud of all thegirl participation andefforts. Well done girls.

Trinity Dark Red 49 Defeated Trinity Light Blue 30
Tonights game was a vast improvement from last week and i was very happy and impressed with the effort all girls showed. The shooters worked really well together with lots of movement in the circle that gave them a lot of opportunities in goals. The defenders worked hard all night and were forcing a lot of turnovers. Special mention must go to Jess Axford who worked tirelessly in both Centre and Goal Keeper which resulted in her getting a lot intercepts and turnovers. Well done to all girls and let’s keep on improving
Trinity Blue lost to Harlequin by nine goals.
Tough challenging game against a quality Harlequins team. For three quarters we were competitive and matched them on the score board with only a 2 to 3 goal margin either way. This was a positive as we lost possession many times, but we stayed in touch due to our consistency in our intensity. We need to learn to settle quicker, not panic and play smarter. Errors in our timing of leads, and many of our leads being from behind and not forward was frustrating. The last quarter they proved to be stronger and with excellent shooting from their goalies and drive through their centre court we were overpowered. Rotating our 10 players each quarterdid not assist with our court plays and we will also work on our attacking skills at training. Our defence tried hard the whole match. Special mention to Chloe's never give up attitude and commitment at GD along with strong rebounding from Alannah at GKespecially in the first half. This was a game that showed the areas we need to work on and I know these talented players will rise to the challenge. Good effort from Emily in GA and Claudia in WA and WD. All our goalies did shoot well when they put up their shots, and when wemanaged to feedinto them effectively. As mentioned our last quarter was a little disappointing but we toughed it out against quality opposition and our attitude tokeep trying when we make mistakes is great to see. Best Players: Chloe Mildred, Claudia Batten

Inter 2
Trinity Green 19 defeated Trinity White 4
Although this was a fairly low scoring game, the girls played extremely well. The defenders were the strongest players on the court tonight, makingmany turnovers. Leads are getting better but still need some work, along with passes and just general game speed. The girls are a little too erratic which causes inconsistent and indecisive play. All in all, this is a great bunch of girls and they are a very strong team.
Congratulations girls for being put up to Inter 1s. We're going to do well .
Trinity Blue defeated Trinity Orange 21-9.
A beautifully played game by the girls tonight, taking home their first win for the season. Nichole and Jamie worked incredibly together during the first half of the match, moving around and scoring those much needed goals. I was glad to see that Nichole was able to play with our fill in, Ellie, and change her style of game so that her and Ellie worked together as a team. I was really proud of all the girls tonight, they played with spirit and enthusiasm that for me as a coach was great to see. Though we still need to work on our leads and we didn’t always use the ball to our advantage the girls took some amazing intercepts all along the court. Hopefully we can continue to get better over the year and score some more wins!

Trinity Pink, 4 lost to Trinity Green, 19.
A very tough Third round match for Pink. We were up against a very strong opposition who were much more experienced and faster than us! We moved quite well around the court but our passing and catching let us down this week. Training next week will focus on these two things. The defenders played a very good game, with many rebounds; Green was just too good in the centre. We welcome Sophie to our team, who has already shown us her ability in defence. Despite the loss, all girls kept their heads up and kept fighting until the final siren. A great, but very tough game girls
Trinity Orange9 lost to Trinity Blue 21.
Last night, the girls played with gutsy enthusiasm and humour. Unfortunately, Trinity Blue were just too strong from the outset. I was very impressed with Chloe Jones and Zoe Sculfer Baldwin’s efforts in the mid court. As per usual, Aleisha Rogan put in a solid performance in defence with countless intercepts and rebounds. At half time, the score was 12-5 but by the final whistle, Trinity Blue had stretched out their lead to 21-9. I ask that the girls remain positive and keep their chins up for the coming few weeks. I can feel a win coming on!

Trinity College Netball starts 2012 in a flurry!

The Netball Year for Trinity College has started with many new initiatives taking place, along with some traditional components continuing.

Netball SA held clinics at STARplex over the summer holidays and had fun learning the essential skills necessary for future netball success. The Clinics focused on technique, ball control, shooting, defence, passing, footwork, small sided games and most importantly were FUN!

Summer Netball at STARplex and Gawler are nearing the finals and the season has been a huge success with 51 Trinity teams participating. The new STARplex competition on Wednesdays has run reasonably smoothly for its first Junior season and will now continue to run on Wednesdays during winter and for many seasons to come.

Trials for Trinity College Netball Academy and Knockout teams were held in Weeks 1 and 2 with around 120 girls vying for a place in either the Open Girls, Year 10 and Year 8/9 Knockout netball teams, and the Year 7/8/9 Development team which make up the Senior and Junior groups for the newly established Trinity College Netball Academy. The Netball Academy aims to to foster excellence and elite skills in talented young athletes by providing skills development sessions conducted by high level State League and advanced coaches along with strength and conditioning sessions. In coming years the program will be expanded to include netballers from younger year levels.

Natalie von Bertouch visits Trinity
A group of lucky, keen and eager netballers and staff were very privileged to listen to Natalie von Bertouch, current Australia Netball Diamonds Captain and Adelaide Thunderbirds mid-court player, present information on healthy diet and nutrition and body image. Natalie is a qualified Dietician and was able to impart some wisdom about a healthy diets and how to fuel up and hydrate before games. It was a wonderful opportunity and to have someone as well respected as Natalie come out to Trinity and discuss the important issue that does impact many teenage girls at some point.

Winter Netball nominations for the STARplex and Gawler competitions are in and it again looks to be another bumper year for those competitions. The Wednesday competition will continue at STARplex for all age groups from Netta to Open Ladies and we continue to support the Gawler & District Netball Association competition on Saturdays. Training will start in week 9 for all winter teams – coaches will be allocated teams very soon. Team lists will be sent out via email and will be published on the Trinity college website on the Netball page. As we have a large number of teams again this year, if you have an interest in coaching and / or umpiring on either Wednesday or Saturday please contact me in the Sports Office on 85220645.

NetSetGo! for up and coming young netballers from Reception to Year 5 is on again this Term with a lovely group of future netball stars enjoying the structured program which provides every participant with the opportunity to develop netball skills, physical fitness, social skills, sportsmanship and an understanding of the game of netball. NetSetGo! is run for 8 weeks each Term at STARplex on Thursdays.

Boot Camp was held to make final selections for the Netball Academy and Knockout teams. Fifty girls attended the 2012 netball boot camp which was a great success again. Fromthe 12 minute run to aqua aerobics there was plenty of action. All the teams worked well together helping each other on the scavanger hunt. The talks from Mrs Noris, Miss Manou and Mrs Murrayhelped the girls a lot in dealing with selection and non-selection in knockout teams. Not only was there fitness testing but also a Body Balance class and many different games done in teams. The food was delicious - thankyou to Mrs Furby and Susie Twigger and the games and movie at night was heaps of fun. We all appreciate the effort the teachers and staff have putin and hopefully this has yet again set us up for another great College netball year. Adele Wilton, Open team.

Trinity Netball Program - The Choice of Many
The start of the new Summer Netball Season has seen a massive boost in the number of participants in the Trinity College Netball program.
With around 430 students from Reception to Year 12 participating in the recently revived Junior Netball competition at STARplex, the STARplex Ladies competition on Mondays’ and Wednesdays’, the G&DNA Summer competition on Tuesdays and in Net Set Go clinics every week, netball has proven that it’s the number 1 participant sport at the College.
It’s fantastic to know that the netball program is seen as something Trinity students of all ages and abilities want to be involved in, and can be attributed to the efforts and success of all those involved – the coaches, umpires, players and supporters.

Further to offering netball alone, Trinity College has taken its development a step further by offering the Athletic Development program for those who are serious about increasing their general strength, fitness and agility which will improve on court performance and help reduce the chance of injury. For more information on Athletic Development or Netball contact the Sports Office on 85238749 or 85220645.
