Trinity hosts visiting Singapore team

The Trinity College Cricket Academy, made up of members from our junior and senior cricket academies, hosted a visiting Singapore team as part of the Trinity Sunday celebrations. Click here for the match report - it was a thriller!

Trinity retains exchange trophy

Trinity 1stX1 defeated Kormilda (100 from 37 overs) by 7 wickets.
Bowling: J Dearing with 5/14 from 7 overs, Williams 2/12 from 7 overs, M Dearing 2/19 from 6 overs.
Batting: Elvin, 52 from 40 balls, M Dearing 37 from 48 balls, Moloney, 35 from 46 balls.

Trinity won the toss and elected to bowl on a perfect Waldeck Oval pitch with a strong, cool breeze coming from the South West. It was not long before M Dearing, pushing into the breeze, presented an opportunity to young wicket-keeper Presbury who took the catch neatly and Kormilda had lost an opener in just the second over. The Trinity Captain took a second wicket in his third over and when Ryan Roberts took a brilliant reflex catch at short cover from the bowling of Stimson, Kormilda was 3/12 in its fourth over. Jackson Dearing then entered the attack and captured two wickets in consecutive balls in his second over and a wicket in each of his third and fourth overs (again featuring the brilliant Roberts’s reflexes). Kormilda was now reeling at 7/31 after just 18 overs. At this point in their innings, Kormilda had its two youngest (and smallest) batsmen at the crease and to their credit they made the Trinity attack look fairly ordinary taking 14 runs from one over by number one strike bowler Stimson which included a six. These two contributed a valuable 66 runs with some fine shot making adding to Kormilda’s score and when spinner Williams brought their partnership to an end and Jackson Dearing dismissed the number 10, Kormilda was all out for 100 from 37 overs.

Trinity started its run chase at a cracking pace and when Williams was dismissed in the 9th over, the score was 1/40. Mitch Dearing joined Moloney at the crease and when Moloney was out for a well compiled 35 from 47 balls,  Daniel Elvin partnered Dearing and this pair completed the necessary runs to win, adding an excellent 89 runs from 88 balls. Elvin in particular showed a hitherto unseen brilliant display of shot-making and running between wickets to finish with 52 not out from 40 balls, featuring 6 fours and 2 sixes.

Trinity Cricket results, March 3

First XI:   Pembroke  10/ 230 (44.5 overs) defeated Trinity 10/91 (28.1 overs)
Bowling  - Davies 5/51, J Dearing 2/58.
Batting -  J Dearing 40 n.o. (35 balls, 5 fours, 2 sixes).

An easy victory to Pembroke First X1.3/03/12.

Based on a feeling that there was a certain amount of moisture in the air and grass on the wicket which might aid the Trinity swing bowlers, Captain Dearing won the toss and inserted the opposition. J Dearing was the first to strike in the fifth over. Wickets soon fell to M Dearing, G Davies (2), and Williams. With the score at 5/142 after 26 overs, the home side was fielding well and feeling fairly comfortable. However, it was not until the 40th over that the next wicket fell to Davies, and was immediately followed by a wicket from leg spinner Moloney. Davies secured two more wickets in the 41st and 44th overs and Pembroke were all out for 230 from 44.5 overs. Trinity had fielded well with some very good catching and fielding by keeper Presbury (2), J Dearing (2), Roberts and Schaper. Best with the ball was Year 10 newcomer Geordie Davies with a well deserved return of 5/51 from 9 overs.
The less said about the Trinity run chase the better. Six batsmen failed to disturb the scorers, and the highest score was a brilliant innings of 40 not out from 35 balls by Jack Dearing. A great deal of work will have to be spent in the coming weeks and months in order to improve batting technique so that a competitive effort with the bat and ball will restore some pride to Trinity Cricket.

Ian Glover, Coach 1stX1.

2nd XI:  Trinity 8/96 def. PAC 74

Magee 19*, Lawrence 18, Brennan 11
Hodgson 3/13, Emmett 3/7

Another great team effort from the boys this week. A dewy, slippery track made the decision to bowl easy and the opening bowlers performed well keeping the score down. Once the wickets started they tumbled in quick succession and we eventually rolled PAC in the 21st over. It was a bit of a nervous start for our batsmen as we fell to 3/24 after 6 overs, but, Hodgson, Lawrence and Magee steadied the ship taking us to within 10 runs of the score in the 14th over. Each lad got some time at the crease, thanks to a retirement and some flashy ‘strokes’ from the tail end, showing the comradery amongst this year’s playing group.

10A:  Trinity College 6/128 (27 overs) defeated St Ignatius8/115 (27 overs)
Batting Kyle Presbury 38, Chris Graser 31, Jack Millar 26, Brayden Matthews 15*
Bowling Chris Graser 2/4, Jack Millar 2/15, Jordan Martin 1/13, Sam Montecelli 1/15

After losing the toss and being sent in to bat the opening pair of Kyle Presbury and Chris Graser began the innings cautiously but managed to compile an excellent first wicket stand of 68. With the introduction of Jack Millar the scoring rate lifted immediately with a number of innovative shots to all parts of the ground and was well supported by Brayden Matthews. With only a few overs to spare at the end of the innings the middle order batsmen of Davies, Bradley, Martin and Maloney opened their shoulders making some very important runs to push the total to 128. When it came to bowl, the Trinity bowlers bowled with aggression and the players in the filed back them up well with good pressure right from the start. Jordan Martin, Chris Graser and Jack Millar took early wickets and reduced the opposition to 6/46 and the game look like Trinity would cruise to an easy win. With some players required for both First XI and club duties, we entered the last 12 overs of the game with only 9 available players and many gaps opened up in the field. St Ignatius took the advantage and went about chasing down the total. In the dying stages of the game the bowlers stuck to our plan and with some smart field placings we managed to restrict the opposition and record a pleasing win against the odds.

 9A Trinity 115 def Marryatville 114
Batting: Dylan Milhench 53, Kyle Earl 16
Bowling: Kyle Earl 3/22, Travis Eves 2/26, Jordan Saunders 2/27

Trinity won the toss and elected to bat on a small oval at dewy outfield down at Marryatville. The boys got off to a solid start with Kyle Earl and Max Williams opening the batting. After being elevated from number 3, Kyle looked comfortable in the opening spot. Unfortunately a run out lead to Max being dismissed and from there the team lost regular wickets, making it hard to build a total they would have liked. Swinging across the line and some ordinary running between the wickets certainly had a negative effect on the innings. Dylan Milhench was outstanding however in the middle order, hitting an excellent 53 runs off 37 balls. A number of wides also helped the total reach a defendable 115, however it would take some hard work with the ball and in the field to do so.

Marryatville got off to an excellent start, with some regular boundaries being hit all over the ground due to some short and inconsistent bowling.  Thankfully the fielding was brilliant, with a number of the boys cutting off certain boundaries. Through the middle of the innings the line and length improved and some wickets started to fall, resulting in a lack of runs too. Kyle Earl, Hossam Amin and Dylan Milhench all kept the ball up at the stumps. However it was always going to come down to a tight finish with Marryatville continually edging towards the low total. With 3 runs required for victory, 2 for a tie and 9 wickets down, Kyle Earl was given the responsibility to bowl what was sure to be the final over. In true Gary Putland style he kept the ball up and at the stumps, leaking only 1 single before taking a solid caught and bowled chance off the final ball of the over to secure victory for Trinity by 1 run.

9B Trinity 10/101 defeated Adelaide High 6/97
Batting: Harrison Varley 1/64, Jacob Snook 1/24
Bowling: Harrison Tuck 2/18, Connor Townsend 1/6

Trinity played away this week against Adelaide High who gave them quite a challenge during term four last season. Both teams had very similar line-ups which meant it was going to be close again. Trinity send Adelaide into bat first with a damp pitch that made it difficult for their batsman to add to the scoreboard with any consistency. Adelaide lost their first wicket for 10 to a great ball from Hamish Perriman that took the middle stump. Their first drop held his wicket quite well and both batsmen started a slow scoring partnership that got them to the ball before drinks before Harrison Tuck took a great catch off his own ball.  The wickets fell after drinks and the next four were quite quick until a long standing partnership got them all the way to 97 runs for their innings.

Trinity went into bat knowing that they had just come off a match in which they scored 208 and the boys were quietly confident in their ability to reach the target quickly. Jacob Snook and Harrison Varley were great as openers as they held their wicket and scored a quick 67 before Jacob was caught behind. After the first wicket, the confident approach was quickly nullified as wicket after wicket fell for very small totals. It was an uphill battle before Trinity knew it and the run to beat the 97 was on. Trinity got to within 7 with 6 overs to go, but had lost their last wicket which forced Harrison Varley, who had retired earlier, to come back to the crease. Harrison quickly punished the attack with a six and then a four to swipe the game away from Adelaide.

8A:  Blackfriars 8As 5/102 defeated Trinity 8As 5/100
Bowling: Southwell 3/9, Wiseman and Hamilton 1 wicket each
Batting: Roberts 20* ret., Matters 12*ret.

On a very damp wicket and outfield, Captain Bailey Zobel won the toss and elected to bowl in the hope it would be difficult to score runs early on a wet wicket. The team was rewarded with Josh Southwell taking an early wicket catching the batsman LBW. The fielding in the wet looked difficult, however the boys were exceptional at stopping anything hit at them and most of the time finishing the play to the wicket keeper Dylan Crouch, whose fielding was also exceptional in the wet. Debutants Zack Luck and Trent Van Dongen bowled extremely well in their first overs for the College but unfortunately just couldn’t snag a wicket. While the Blackfriars batsman found it hard to score, they still managed to keep the run rate at 4 an over, due to inaccurate bowling from the Trinity side. 40 of the 102 Blackfriars runs came from extras including 26 wides and 6 no balls. Best with the ball was Josh Southwell with an outstanding 3/9. Dylan Wiseman and Jack Hamilton managed one wicket each.

The boys run chase did not start well with Zack Luck run out for early for 2. It was the partnership of Kyal Roberts and Bradley Matters that really began the run chase with both batsman retiring, Roberts on 20 and Matters on 12. A series of quick wickets saw Jack Hamilton and Matt Thomas having to face the remaining 5 overs with 28 runs to win. Matt Thomas managed to bash around the Blackfriars bowlers and the boys required 4 runs from the last ball. He clobbered the ball down to long on which unfortunately pulled up short of the rope leaving the boys 2 runs short. It was a wonderful effort from all the boys with an unlucky finish. I look forward to our final 2 day game in the coming weeks.

8B:  Trinity College 8/59 lost 8b’s Pembroke  3/151

The season has kick of with a loss and a win (default) Saturday gave us good weather conditions with the passing rain earlier in the week. With Trinity winning the toss and choosing to bowl first the game was able to be controlled from the start. Trinity was put under early pressure by Pembrokes Harry (44), who’s run score was ended with a catch from Gabriel. However Trinity was still unable to grasp control and was battered around the crease by Jonathon(52) and Sam (33). With sloping fielding and a unfocused fielding side Trinity has a lot to step up to with Pembroke hitting a high score of 151.

With a re shuffled batting line up Trinity took to the pitch knowing they had a bit of pressure upon them. With Angus Green and Cameron Woods  taking to the field it was not long till the first wicket came. With Angus starting to read the ball it was a good line picked by Pembrokes opening bowler Sam. C that hit middle stump. However with Captain Brody Martin coming to the crease it was a chance to settle down and hit out against a confident Pembroke. With both batsman running singles it look like there was something to be made, however Pembroke stopped Brody and Cameron before they could get settled. The batting tumbled with no runs scored Cameron Sanders(12 n.o) and Adam Seccafein (8 off 8) made a heroic effort by showing patience and good team work at the crease.

With much to work on over the next two weeks, I hope Trinity will be able to pull off a show stopping performance.

Primary A:  Trinity College 10/80 defeated Blackfriars 7/78
Batting: Nick Hooker 18, Tim Eves 17, Aaron Hoppo 9
Bowling: Liam Edwards 1/10, Josh Carter 1/15, Liam Beazleigh 2/9, Rory Nottle 1/12, Jayden Wilson 2/5

In our first one day match the team was keen to get off to a fast start. After losing the toss we were put in the field. On a wet pitch, Liam Edwards got the team an early wicket. Blacks fought back with some good middle order batting. The spinners had an effect on the match, with Jayden taking two wickets (both stumpings!) in quick succession. At the end of 22 overs we had 79 runs to chase down. This total was greatly inflated by the amount of extras we bowled, 27 in total, including 14 wides.

As we were chasing a smaller total we changed the batting order around from last week. This back fired on us with the loss of 4 quick wickets left us at 4/8 after 7 overs. An excellent and controlled partnership of 41 runs from Nick Hooker and Tim Eves recused the score. In the chase for quick runs we lost some middle order wickets at regular intervals. Some outstanding lower order batting from Logan McFall, Aaron Hoppo and Liam Beazleigh saw us overcome the total with 3 balls to spare.

What a thriller.

Year 4/5 North 3 for 63 (average 21) defeated Year4/5 South 3 for 48 (average 16)
Bowling Callum Saunders 1 for 7, Joshua Taylor 1 for 1, Thomas Clements 1 for 8
Batting Cooper Zobel 10, Sam Riggs 9

The first afterschool match of the year and it was pleasing to see the parents coming along. North bowled first. The first 4 overs were a little expensive but we were rewarded with a wicket from the bowling of Callum Saunders. Joshua Taylor, a new recruit from year 3 had his first wicket from the 5th ball of his first over. Good bowling in the 9,10 and 11th overs resulted in only 1 run. In the last over Thomas Clements was successful with a wicket off the 2nd to last ball. Fielding was good from all players.

In our turn to bat there was good calling and more confident judgement of runs from the whole team. The only 4 of the afternoon came from Sam Riggs.
